I went on a date with a guy last night, we met for drinks. We had a fantastic time talking and everything seemed to go over well. When he walked me back to my car he gave me a hug and said we should do dinner then proceeded to ask if I was available tomorrow evening. Unfortunately I was not as I have to work, he then proceeded to say I will call you and we will set something up. I don't think I really thanked him for the evening and I have been toying with the idea of emailing him to do so. Would that be too pushy or upfront?

No...if you really didn't thank him, you should do so. If he's interested, he'll appreciate the email and if he's not, it won't matter whether he appreciates the email or not. The only drawback is that he might respond to the email out of politeness rather than true interest, but his interest level should become clear soon enough.

Sure, send a casual little email - thanks so much for last night, it was fun. sorry I couldn't do dinner but I had a prior commitment, hope you're out having fun - or something to that effect!
