Suggestion from Pianoguy:
Next time you run errands, pay a visit to your local greeting card shop...and pick out a nice (NOT MUSHY OR GOOEY) snail mail friendship card.
Write a short note inside asking this man if he'd like to get together for coffee or a sandwich sometime? Include the words: "I'd like to get to know you a little better!"
If you feel comfortable including your phone number (not email address)...do that too!
This way "the response ball" is in HIS COURT!
Good Luck!

How cute. I know you dont' think it is cute, but it is. Well, he seems to talk to you, so it shouldn't be too difficult to strike up a conversation because he does acknowledge you exist. What would be worse is if your crush didn't even know you existed.
If you get tongue tied around him try asking him questions. I'm sure you are curious about him. You don't say how you know the guy, like whether he works with you or goes to school with you. Depending upon where he is in your life, you can ask a variety of questions. For instance, if he is at work, you can ask him more about his job, or his aspirations within the corporation.
Here's another idea; if you run into him socially, ask him his advise about an issue in your life. Men love giving advise. Maybe you want to take a summer vacation. You can ask him if he was ever at any of the destinations you are interested in going to and what he thought about those vacations. Or, maybe ask him about your car. And then, make sure you follow up with him about what you talked about. This way, the conversation continues and then you can just start conversations with him that have nothing to do with advise. More like, "hey how are you? Did you do anything interesting this weekend?"
Just a few ideas off the top of my head. Hope it helps.
__, what's yours?" or "I've seen you around a lot so I thought I'd introduce myself" is pretty much all it takes to start a conversation with anyone.
