Making Reservations for BF's Birthday

Hello all! My BF's birthday is almost 3 weeks away and although I've made some progress on finding the perfect gift for him - I'm still working on "The Big Gift". I tried reserving a nice hotel for him here in New York City for him but most of the hotels are either sold out that weekend or way out of my financial reach (i.e. $1,000+ for 2 nights).

I'm definitely going to get him some small gifts like having balloons with a small birthday cake delivered to his job and like giving him a guitar lamp since he's a very accomplished guitar player. However, I'm also thinking about taking him to Nobu, a very upscale Japanese Restaurant here in New York City since my BF L-O-V-E-S Japanese food. The restaurant is kinda pricey but, hey, I feel he deserves to be treated to the best Japanese food in Manhattan! Besides, this place has a very romantic ambiance and many celebs frequent there which is cool too.

My question to you guys is when should I make the reservations to this restaurant? Is it too early to make reservations today?? I plan to take BF there on Saturday December 3rd.

Nobu gets very crowded, by all means make the reservations as far in advance as you can

I'm curious, were you able to get a reservation? From what I've read about Nobu, even three weeks ahead wouldn't be nearly enough time to get one...

Call every day to check for a cancellation. Also look to go on an "off" day.

Oh OK I'll call Nobu again today. I just assumed they would call me if there was a cancellation. I'm not sure where I'm at on the waiting list.

Wow! I think it's really great that you have put so much thought into suprising your man. I definitely see where you are coming from. Especially if your guy always picks up the tab, it's really nice to want to treat him every now and then.
Some of the things you are thinking about do sound pricey. What you don't want to do is put yourself in a financial bind. Anything you can do for him to make him feel special and appreciated, whether it is an expensive dinner at Nobu or a soft pretzel outside Central Park, would be great.

Thanks Ashley for your response! And don't worry, BF's surprise won't "break the bank" (LOL). I'll keep you all posted on BF's reaction to his B-day surprise.
