I have a question. I went into counseling actually twice before, and it didn’t work out because I didn’t like one of them, and the other one just didn’t seem to be helping me. I would ask for questions and help on things such as suggestions on books I could read on my own and things I could do to help certain behaviors, and she could never even come up with anything for me. She seemed very inexperienced to me. Anyway, my question is how do I find a good counselor who will help me?? I don’t want to just pick one out of a hat again. None of my friends go to counseling, so I cant ask for a recommendation from them. Does anyone here have any suggestions, or maybe even some recommendations on good ones?? I live in NY in huntington, long island.
Thanks so much!!

You can look for a referral service but going one step beyond that you might want to prepare a list of questions for a potential counselor and do a bit of an interview before agreeing to any long term commitment.
Where did you they to school? Certifications? Years in business? Types of clients? Estimation of how long you will need counseling? Background?
Look for similarities between the type of clients the counselor has and his/her background to your own situation.
