I am dating someone who I've dated on and off for 6 years, for several months, non-exclusively at this point. We stopped at his place yesterday afternoon for about a half hour - he shares a place with his sister, who was not there. All of this is just background. On his dining room table was a large plastic shopping bag from a store. It wasn't closed but it wasn't wide open such that you could just peek in. I know he went to that store the day before. While he was out of the room, I peeked in the bag - pushed aside the part of the bag leaning in and looked and saw something on top that concerned me as far as our relationship - however, it had nothing to do with whether he is trustworthy and it is not something he should have told me about under any definition. There was nothing "shocking" about it.

So my question is, did I snoop or since the bag was right there and mostly open it was ok to peek in? I think that I snooped (since the item was in a bag and not just laying out on the table), and so I did not say anything to him and do not plan to, although it is difficult. I should add that although the snooping issue really has never come up for either of us I know that he probably has a broad definition of snooping.

Wow - got longer than I expected - I am really just curious whether you think I snooped. Thanks and hapy president's day.

Wow.... This is a good one............

if the bag didn't have a big sign saying...."DENNA... look inside! "

you snooooooped! LOL. :)

great post......

This deserves 5 stars *****

* 1 for looking.

* 2 for looking.

* 3 for moving the stuff to see better.

* 4 for looking.

* 5 for wondering if you snooped.

I don't wonder what was in the bag.....

Just if "he" video tape you snooping....... :)

ok, since I didn't know what this post was about and I looked here, is that snooping? :-)

What I think everyone is saying here Deena, is this... if you tell them what was in the bag you were not snooping but if you don't tell them, you were!

Actually, you only half-snooped - part of the bag was open so you just looked, the part that wasn't open and you moved to see better created the snoop.

Really though, I think snooping involves just more than simple curiosity. We are all curious and if there is a bag lying there partially open... sorta like shaking a Christmas present and trying to guess what's inside. I think snooping involves a trust issue, don't you? You were just curious.

When curiosity is piqued and the temptation is there most anyone would have looked. It's not like you went into his closet and crawled up to the top shelf and opened the bag. I would also venture to guess that, if the situation were reversed, he would have looked too.

Me? I'm not asking what was in the bag!

Update - without confessing I was able to determine from a further conversation with him (yes we are both lawyers) that the item was not what I thought it was - which is a good thing. While I am not 99% sure why he purchased it, the two scenarios are equally acceptable.

Thanks for all of the responses!!
