What gift to get...???

Okay, first an explanation of the situation. I am currently seeing a girl and her birthday is fast approaching. We aren't completely serious, but we have gone out together and have been talking and getting to know one another the past 6 months or so.

So I would like to do something for her birthday. Just a small gesture. I am thinking of getting a vintage-style New York City wall calendar (because she loves the city). But I feel that I should do a little something more than just a calendar. I was thinking flowers (not roses). Would this be appropriate for a birthday gift? And if so, which type of flower would work best (again, not roses)?

Please let me hear your thoughts and ideas on the subject. I am planning on getting the gifts by Monday, her birthday is on a Friday. Thanks!

I like the calendar idea, plus you could throw in an invitation to dinner at a fancy restaurant. I'd give her a sunflower if you want. Plan ahead and surprise her. We women love when a man plans ahead of time.

Why not the calendar and roses? It's not a marriage proposal or even a statement of commitment- it just says, hey I feel romantically about you.

I am sort of leaning against roses... I know they don't indicate commitment or proposals all the time, but I don't think her and I are that romantically involved yet. So I, personally, would feel weird with roses. I just want to do a simple gesture for her birthday.

I wasn't thinking about dinner for her birthday. Since we won't be able to see eachother on her actual birthday, but that doesn't mean I can't take her out on another day for a birthday dinner. In fact, that sounds like a realy good idea.

Any other thoughts on the flower idea? Tulips? I like the sunflower idea. Just want to make sure I am not sending mixed messages either.
