What is it all for anyway???

My boyfriend and I met 5 months ago and fell in love instantly. He lives in London and I live in New York so needless to say, the long distance relationship hasn't been easy. Since we've met, he said he would move here eventually to be with me, but recently he decided that he wants to move back to Australia (where he is originally from). Now I don't know what to do. I am very attached to my family and I don't think I could ever leave them to move to the other side of the world, but at the same time, I don't want to imagine my life without him. I guess what I'm wondering is if it is even worth it to continue having a relationship with this man if we want totally different things for our future. Please help.

I have met people who really enjoy long distance relationships. They feel there is somebody out there that is thinking of them. When friends ask them about their SO they can proudly say that they are deeply in love but their SO is in Thailand, or Nepal or outer Mongolia. It's like having a relationship without actually having the relationship.

If you aren't one of these types you probably should move on.

I would suggest talking to the folks on the long distance board here... they will have a lot of advice to share.

If the two of you want "totally different things for your future" then it may not be a good idea to continue anyway. If you're going different directions in life then it doesn't really matter how many miles separate you. In most long-distance relationships, I think the eventual intention is to meet up at the same point at which you'll be going in the same direction.
It seems like you have to decide what kind of relationship you want for this time in your life. If there's one thing I'd hope for you to remember it's to not be afraid to leave the comforts of home. It's scary but it might be worth it. If this is the right person for you, he'll support you in the move, as well.
