What should I do?

How do you let a guy's offer for a date (he sent it through e-mail!) without hurting his feelings? I met him in one of my classes this semester, and he's approached me after class a few times to say hello. He recently wrote me an e-mail about class (I don't know how he got my e-mail, since I never gave it to him!) and I responded nicely. He seems like a nice guy, but the thing is, one of his friends and I used to have a "thing" and it took me a long time to get over. Anyway, to make a long, boring story short, I'm just not into this guy that way nor am I looking for a relationship right now. What should I say to him, through e-mail, without hurting him? I really don't want him to take it personal (and I still want him to think I'm a nice person!)I appreciate any advice. thanks!

it's personal...it's the kiss of death to say you're a really nice guy, but I want to be friends. maybe just reply no thanks and don't write, 'maybe another time'. You don't owe him a big long explanation just because he asked. You don't have to tell him your life story, either and go overboard with explanations.
