Will this turn him off OR let him know?

I need some advice - I own a small coffee shop/specialty store in a neighborhood. About a year ago, one of our regular customers came up to me - we were flirting as usual. I thought it was friendly flirting, then he asked for my phone number. We made plans for that weekend - then on the afternoon of planned date, he called to say that he got behind at work and would have to take a raincheck. Ok, I thought. He did not call again. I have only seen him in passing and he has come in a few times. I thought, ok - he is just not into me. Then I heard his parents are ill and he has been spending most of his time with them. I am still into him - in our little town, there is not much selection - do I send him a "thinking of you" note - or just chalk it up to "not meant to be"? HELP! I don't want to turn him off, yet I want him to know the door is open. What do I do???

I wouldn't send him any notes. The man has his head on his parents' illness. Next time he comes in for coffee you can express that you heard that his parents are ill and let him know that your good wishes are with them. He can still come to your cafe and ask you out again when the issues resolve.
