Maybe ask something innocent like, "hows the family?" or more to the point, "how's the wife and kids these days?" Frankly, if you have the personality for it, the direct approach can be very rewarding. You could just ask if he's married. If yes, then you have the question answered. If know, the logical follow-up is to ask if he'd like to get together for ? (coffee, drinks, dinner...)
