My mom just told me that my uncle is engaged--he's been widowed twice. The 1st marriage was over 40 yrs. I think this lady is younger, more like 70. She was widowed about 15 yrs ago. So I guess it's never too late on the one hand, but I hope I don't have to wait til I'm a senior citizen to date again. lol I have to say that my reaction was more like "why bother getting married at that age?" but I guess they are probably religious & don't feel they can just live together. I just can't imagine getting married again, but I think you have a diff. perspective if you are divorced as opposed to widowed. It makes me much more cynical about marriage.

Awww, congratulations to them!

While my first thought is also ... "why bother getting married at that age?" ... I assume it's Romantic, instead.

Maybe I'll have to ask him for dating advice.

So are they having a whole wedding? Do they get presents?

Just a civil service? Will there be an announcement party?

How is it all supposed to work

I really have no idea. My uncle lives in RI in the summer & Fla. in the winter. This woman is from Fla, so was the 2nd wife. When he married 2nd DW, they had some kind of a ceremony in church, but it wasn't a legal wedding, because I think she would have lost some pensions if she got remarried. I think it's kind of common in Fla. for priests to do that because of all the old people who would be hurt financially but they feel they can't just live together. The 2nd DW told me that he asked her to come up to RI for the summer but I guess she just felt that she couldn't live w/ him if they weren't married. So I really have no idea about this one. I know the woman has been widowed a long time and she told my mom that she just couldn't believe she found someone again, which is nice.

My mom was widowed when she was around 70 and she never had any interest in finding another man--my dad was kind of bossy so I think she likes the freedom to do whatever she wants and she doesn't have to cater to anyone or cook if she doesnt' want to.
