Next time you are at gymnastics class together I'd walk over and strike up a conversation. Compliment his child on something that you've seen him / her do well, ask how long the child has been in gymnastics and all that stuff. As parents, we all have common ground with another parent. The fact that your kids have gymnastics in common gives you another area to talk about besides just general kids stuff.
Get to know him as a fellow parent / friend and then see where it might lead from there.
