Well it sounds like he did kind of ask you out by his return text: 'he was looking forward to seeing me again soon and whatever day/time worked for me would be great.'
Its just same old scenario in boy meets girl type of dating.. I'm glad you're not a chaser. And I agree its baffling when men text instead of calling.. But men opt for convenience and as far as convenience means "they don't want to do something stupid" to turn you off not the other way around--when convenience means too lazy to lift a finger to dial your number LOL.. But in your situation I think its the 1st one--he maybe too nervous to speak up when he calls you up and doesn't wanna spoil the idea of second date.. Sometimes men act childish or they tend to spill out something stupid when they're nervous or totally smitten by a girl they like (not that they're actually stupid).. Texting would make them think first and choose the best words to say without offending us women, instead of the usual call when they feel they're caught up in an impromptu situation.. Causally ask your male friends about why men opt to text instead of calling.. I did that once and most of the answer is--they don't want to do anything stupid.. Another reason is that they don't want to appear desperate and needy.. Yeah, our men feel dignified too.. That's one of the rules in dating---not to act desperate. So take things slow, enjoy the moment, continue playing it cool and never demand.. Instead, be secured enough and think that you definitely deserve a second date with this wonderful guy and you ain't getting any less than what you deserved.. ;)

Thanks for the great advice!
