Where do over-50s meet?

Any ideas on where over 50 women can meet met except for online, which I am not interested in right now? (I have done that before, between marriages and I know I'm not up for all the rejection and "interviewing" potential dates right now--too much work.) I'm 51 and I would date a guy in his 40's as well. I know people my age aren't in clubs and I don't want to go to "singles dances" even those for middle aged people, I just don't want that "meet market" atmosphere. I would like to get to know someone just as a friend first, not w/ the only option of dating. I really don't know any single guys and don't meet any through work. I just joined a women's group to get out of the house & make new friends. Obviously, I'm not going to meet anyone there. I have been thinking of looking at a "dining out" group that doesn't just involve singles, or any age group, but I was thinking of that more as just fun too, not necessarily just for dating. I know I would tell anyone else just to do something they are interested in, but most of the things I am interested in are either things that women generally do (like shopping) or things that people do alone (reading). I'm not into playing sports, but I do like watching them. I also have a 13 yr old at home, so I'm not available all the time. Any ideas or success stories?

Have you tried looking at groups on the meetup and meetin websites for your city?

yes, I found out about that from someone on ivillage. There is a dining out group in my area. I was thinking of joining but at the time I looked, the weekends they had events planned, I had things to do or it was the weekend I had my son. I think I might try that since it's not strictly a dating event.
