Bad first date?

This is the same guy who's never asked me for a picture - no, I haven't met him yet, but mono tends to make you want to stay home and on the couch. :-)

Anyway, I've started to feel better, so he and I are making tentative plans to meet. He wants to take me flying (he's a pilot). Now, I've gone flying with people I know less than him, but the OLD factor is making me think twice. Am I being paranoid? Is this a bad idea?

Oh, lordy, there is NO WAY I would go up in a plane with someone on a first meet.

No way.

I agree with Sheri. You would be too vulnerable in a private plane with someone you just met. You wouldn't ride in a car with him, would you? A plane is no better and, if he's a lousy pilot, you're in even greater danger! Keep it to a public place the first couple of dates - until you determie that he's not psycho... :-)

Yeah, that's kind of what I figured. I wouldn't get in a car with him, but that's more so he wouldn't take me anywhere and do something illegal. :-) My friends point out that I DO flight instruct, and routinely get into planes with strange men all the time though. Is this different?

Yes, I'd say that it's very different...for one thing, you (presumably) know something about how those planes are maintained.

I'm definitely not worried about his plane, it's just the OLD paranoia kicking in. I'm really just looking for someone to knock some sense into me, because the pilot in me is saying, "I do this all the time," and the girl who dates is saying, "I wouldn't get in a CAR with this guy and let him take me somewhere....".

I mean, are there any situations in OLD where you CAN feel perfectly safe meeting someone?

I'm not sure what you mean...how would meeting in a public place like a Starbucks not be safe?

But in any event, I'm with the girl who dates ;-). Meet him first, at least...you can always go flying on your 2nd date!

It's a nice gesture but a bad idea for a first date. The main purpose of a first date is to get to know someone better and find out if there is any potential for a relationship. I don't think you can do this and avoid a mid-air collision at the same time, especially if he offers you the chance to become a member of the mile high club ;-)

Never thought of it that way. I hate trying to have a serious conversation in a small (which means LOUD) airplane.

Now I just have to decide if he's worth breaking my "no dating pilots" rule.
