I have two friends at work that just said right away “Austin” when I asked (didn’t even blink an eye, LOL) and they say yes the weather is better – you can’t compare 3 weeks to living their all year – its near the gulf (ocean) whereas Dallas is much futher away. Dallas it gets in the 20’s and ice storms in the winters THEY said Austin has none of that or does not get that cold.

Hey, Sorry I'm late getting to your message... I haven't been on the boards much lately.

Yep, I'm in one of those areas you mentioned, so going out on any given night is a bit more of a chore than just living right in Lakewood/Park cities/Uptown/Dowtown, etc. I know there are some good restaurants around there. I'd love to

I live in Texas and have been to Austin many times...and it is absolutely beautiful but really don't know about booming b/c more of a college town, but fun and beautiful..I live 3 hours away and it is a great place to visit...not so cheap either...My brother-in-law bought a very small 900 sq. ft home for $200,000 or more...tiny.....but Austin is a hopping, fun place especially if you are young or even like me 40's ....really nice

It is pretty rare to have tornadoes in Dallas - I don't know much about Austin. But I've lived here 9 years and never been directly threatened by a tornado - there was a really bad one in Ft. Worth several years ago but they really do seem to not come into the city much - more prevalent in the outlying areas and even then, it's not a regular occurence. Living here where we have no basements, you go into a small interior room like a bathroom or closet with something over your head - a pillow, a mattress, whatever. But seriously, it's not like they happen often - I'm sure much less often than earthquakes out there!

I didn't read the rest of the posts but just wanted to wish you luck in your possible new ventures in Texas if you move there. I agree that California is super expensive to live and to buy property. I"m struggling owning a 2 bedroom condo in San Diego, but if i lived in the mid-western states I could probably own a house comfortably. We definately pay for the location that's for sure ;-)

Texas gets about 100 tornados per year. You never know when or where they will strike. When you hear the wind start to blow hard that is a terrifying feeling because you know you can't do anything about it except hide in your interior bathroom and hope yours is not the house that gets destroyed this time. It is just part of life in Texas and other states where there are a lot of tornados. If you are in your car and you see a tornado headed toward you, they say you are supposed to get out of your car and lay face-down in a ditch if you can find one. Not sure about Dallas, but the closer you get to the coast the fewer basements because the water table is too high. Iri

I live in South Texas (Corpus Christi) but I would recommend Austin. The Hill Country beats Dallas any day. Dallas is HOT and suffocating. Austin will be hot too - but at least there's greenery to cool off under. If I had my choice, I'd go for Austin.

I grew up in the suburbs of Ft. Worth and have lived in San Antonio for 4 years now. (I'm 25 now.)

Growing up, I never ventured too much into Dallas, but there was enough to do between Dallas & Ft. Worth in the Metroplex. I know Dallas is trying to revive it's downtown and make it more exciting for the younger, hipper crowd, but I'm not sure how long that will take. Ft. Worth does have a great Cultural Center downtown with the Amon Carter and Kimbell Art Museuems.

I personally like South Texas better because of the access to other things to do on the weekends. Once you get outside of the Metroplex, there's not a lot of options for things to do. Here (Austin/San Antonio area), you've got the Hill Country to the north/west, which is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!! Plus you've got a great selection of lakes for weekend getaways (Marble Falls and Lake LBJ is my favorite). You've also got the Gulf of Mexico about 3 hours to the southeast, so you can visit the coast for a weekend.

Personally, I'd rather live in San Antonio than Austin because it seems more relaxed and (relatively) easier to get around. But if forced to choose, I'd also pick Austin over Dallas.

Some of the other posters wrote about the tornadoes, and yeah, there were more tornado warnings and watches in DFW than I've experienced in San Antonio. The public schools down here don't even have tornado drills, whereas in DFW we had them once or twice a year.

I'm not sure when you visited Texas before, but if you do move down here, be prepared for the long, hot summers. Oh, and the Texas Monthly.com website might be helpful at looking at the various events and restaurants that each city offers.
