Dating while on vacation

I'm reletively new to the online dating scene and not sure how to initiate the first contact. Do guys even like that? I messaged a couple of guys in my local area and never heard back. So, that was a kick in the self esteem. Now, I'm headed out of town for a work trip to Vegas. I am going to be there a few days and don't want to spend the entire time alone since my work commitments are minimal. Has anyone else used online dating while on vacation? What did you do to fill some of your spare time?
I have never tried using OLD while on vacation. I have seen postings on Craigslist (which I think is probably a better place than a regular OLD site where people are really looking for relationships) that are something similar--like "I'll be in town for business over the weekend--does anyone want to go out for dinner?" I do think you should be very cautious, even more cautious than usual about doing OLD, because on a regular OLD site, you have a chance to talk for a while and go out for coffee and I do think most guys know that women are generally not looking for a hookup unless they state that, but if you're on a trip to Vegas, you never know what kind of guys you might meet--they might think "great, this girl will be easy to hook up with."
As for your first question--if you think that emailing 2 guys & never hearing back is unusual, you haven't done OLD for long--I can't tell you how many guys I have emailed & not heard back from--it would be embarrassing. But it's like anything else--if the guy likes you, he'll be happy that you emailed first & he doesn't have to fear rejection. I think all the guys I went out with last year (all 3) were guys I emailed first.
Sometimes, the same old same old at home clearly isn't working. Until age 39, all my girlfriends were NYC residents (where I also live), but then I stopped meeting anyone worthwhile at home. My wife is originally from South America and livng in the Midwest when we met online. My girlfriend before her was born in South Africa and living in Sydney, Australia when I met her.
My question is how easy is it for you to get to Las Vegas? Will you likely have more business trips there? If the answer is that you can get there easily and/or have more business trips, then, yes, see if there are worthwhile men there who might be interested in you. What do you have to lose?
As to what to do when not dating or working, if the weather is right, you can hang out by the pool. You can also wander around the strip seeing the hotels, many of which have interesting designs or gimmicks. See various shows in the evening. Not far outside Las Vegas, you have Hoover Dam and a couple of interesting state parks. Finally, Bryce, Zion, and the Grand Canyon National Park are all just a few hours drive from Las Vegas.
