From a quick perusal of the messages you quote, it looks like the guy writing them is an Iranian, whose English isn't quite as perfect as it might be (though far better than my Iranian will ever be, on the off chance I ever acquire any), and who probably is suffering from a certain amount of cultural dislocation and confusion.

It might be a bit inaccurate to treat him as a representative example of "guys," whether online or otherwise.

As for the specific guy, I doubt he thinks you're dumb. It seems to me more likely the case that he's struggling with an unfamiliar idiom and trying hard to say the "right" thing, while hampered by a highly imperfect idea of what that might be, more driven by romcom movies then any real world experience.

Unfortunately, online dating is turning into a one big scam and they come in male or female profile form.

Nice post!! You can tell that his post was trying to draw a weaker woman in to execute his scam. And trust me....alot of them are successful. I work in a fraud department of a large national Bank and we deal with this daily.

I am going to disagree with the other posters. I don't think it's a scam.

He's just a lonely 40 year old man. He's probably sent out a lot of replies and gotten little or no responses. When he got a response from you, he obviously misunderstood and blew things out of proportion.

I've never been THAT bad.. but I have had a few flirty emails with a woman and then just started talking too much about myself. It became obvious that the woman loved the firlty/joke material but really had no interest in me as a person. That's fine, that's part of life.

I agree with you. I think some guys think this is the way to woo a woman. Kind of sad.
