I currently have a profile on mydate.com, and while it's not free, it does allow non-paying members to respond to emails sent by a paying member.

I'm disillusioned with match, so I doubt I'll pay to join that site again (my profile is currently hidden on there anyway). If I do pay to join a site anytime soon, it'll probably be Yahoo (less expensive and they haven't *yet* added some of the annoying features match has, although my fear is that they will soon).

I feel the same way that you do about match.com.

I only have paid for a few here and there, and only if someone really strikes my interest and I want to email them.

One dating site allows you to reply if a paying member emails you first so that's worked out well for me. LOL

I was on Match for a month, but I didn't like having to pay every month. Now I'm using Village Voice Personals, and I like that a lot better because it works on the credit system.

I'm the sucker here, I guess. When I decided to do OLD, I jumped in feet first: I was a paying member of Match AND Yahoo from October through May. I met 11 men, and there were a couple of others who I talked with on the phone or emailed with. So it was expensive, but I liked the freedom to do what I wanted. Wouldn't you know it, after a few very dry months, I finally stopped the automatic payments, but left my profile up, and I've had more responses in the past month than in the entire spring. There's just that tricky bit of not being able to respond directly. Some men do put their private email or phone in their first message to me, cleverly.
