In Chat on monday the topic of Dr. John Grey came up. I did a little homework on the famous author, you guys should do the same, just google his name and you will find tons of articles claiming that he is a fraud. Read up and let me know what you think.

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

I've never thought much of his work (he relies too heavily on gender stereotypes and generalizations for my taste), but I guess I'm too cynical to think that it's a big surprise that doctorates are often only "on paper".

I guess I'm not sure that necessarily makes the person a "fraud" though. I could see someone feeling they need to have the "Dr." in front of their name for marketing purposes, but still giving good advice. Dr. Phil, for example--I pretty much assume, (fairly or not) that his PhD isn't the real thing, but I still like his advice.

"Dr. Phil has a B.S, M.A. and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from North Texas State University with a dual area of emphasis in clinical and behavioral medicine. He has been a board-certified and licensed clinical psychologist since 1978."

Interesting... so he's not an actual 'doctor'... but he still has some insightful ideas that have helped a LOT of people. You don't need to be board-certified to give good advice in a user-friendly format, which is what he's done for many years. I say the lack of a formal degree doesn't make him any less effective, though it's definitely misleading.

No, Phil McGraw IS a Doctor. A PhD is a doctoral degree. He just isn't able to prescribe medication.
