I encountered that sometimes when I was on online dating. After enough e-mails, I would say, "Well, I think we've said all there is to say through e-mails. If you want to get to know each other better, let me know if you want my number." Then, I left the ball in their court to ask for my number. That spurred things on to either a date or the closure of a non-happening.

I agree with you that after 4 or 5 emails a coffee date is in order. Half the time I just stop emailing or I will ask the guy out. I'll email something like "would you be interesting in meeting sometime soon?" The ones I have asked usually say "yes." I've gone out maybe twice with those

I don't see a problem in politely saying something like "Hey, it's been great chatting by email, but I really think it's easier to get to know someone face to face.
