First date with an online guy
Wed, 07-25-2012 - 4:13am

I'm meeting a guy from an online dating site for the first time tomorrow.

We've agreed to 8:30 PM ... what can I expect - is this a dinner date? or coffee date? He has asked me to pick a place so I'm confused.

I'd offer my advice on your topic but it's a little late for that now. How did it go? An inquiring mind wants to know : )

Hi. I can't believe he didn't specify which. I definitely would have.  I'd call to clarify beforehand. Anyway, when I was single and meeting women from an internet dating service, I normally preferred to meet just for a beverage. If we both remained interested, then I'd take the woman out for a nicer time the next time we met. Too many encounters online were dead ends, so the first meeting I preferred to keep simple.

I figure at 8:30 the guy would have already expected you to eat dinner.  I think a bar that isn't too loud is good so you can talk or if you're not comfortable then go to a cafe.

I always thought of the first meeting as just that: a meeting. Not a date. I prefer to meet either for coffee or a drink, not dinner. That way, if it's a bust, no one is stuck paying for an expensive evening, feeling resentful.

I would suggest meeting at a bar that serves tapas. This could also be a nice wine bar. That way, you can order a drink and a small appetizer type thing if you want to. If it is really going well, you can always head to a restaurant for dinner.
