I am not a flight attendant!!

My profile says that I work in aviation (just that, no specifics), and about 70% of men who initiate contact ask if I am a flight attendant - and it really bugs me. Not to mention it's a total turnoff, because I'm not used to people making assumptions like that. Is it ok for me to be turned off by their assumptions? How do I get them to stop asking? Do I really need to change my profile?

Thanks for sharing your perspective. I do think it's an important job, and we would all miss the flight attendants if they were not there. I think society takes for granted a lot of people in customer service positions, and don't fully realize the scope of work involved.

I think this brings up a good point in relation to OLD and dating in general. I think most of us would like to be respected by dates or potential dates. We're proud of our lives and career choices (for the most part), and we don't want to feel judged for those choices. A guy who feels the need to put a stereotype on you, or judge your choice of career is probably not the guy you want to go out with anyway.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to insult you.

ETA - It's just that I've never run into any kind of discrimination in aviation and get very angry when someone assumes I'm a f/a just because I'm a woman. Their answer when I tell them that is always, "Well, it's the most visible job!" BS. I'm a pilot and a mechanic, THOSE are visible jobs, but you never see men assuming I'm one of them.

I am so with you. My brother is a pilot and he always tells me what a hard job you guys have... he gets to close the cockpit door while you guys are left with the crazy public! And you don't get paid half of what you should. The thing that amazes me about flight attendants is the fact that within a one hour span, you can take care of everyone in the plane, clean up and still have time to secure it all! Truly a hard job...
