Well, new year, time to try something new, right? So I "unhid" my profile on POF. There are actually quite a lot of guys in my age group in my area and I don't have time to wade through everyone right now so I'll see if anyone contacts me. Since it's free I don't really care that much. I was going to wait until I got a photo but I didn't--maybe I'll have to ask my DD to take one of me before she goes back to college. That should be embarrassing. Otherwise I don't have a picture of myself that's less than 5 yrs old. So--wish me luck.

Best of luck! I unhid mine on match last week.

Photo tip: If you have a digital camera, you more than likely have a self-timer on it--a 10 second delay so you can jump in the frame. A tripod really helps with this, but you could always place the camera on something stable. I usually have to shoot about 60 shots to get one I like. :)

I put the camera on a half wall to take pics for a fashion site. You can crop and adjust later.

POF seems to be great or not so good depending on your area. I participated a few years ago and at that time there were a lot of events planned so it was easy to meet people without the pressure of a "meet". I made a lot of friends and had fun.

I never thought of that--I do have my ex's tripod that he left in the basement, or I could put it on a shelf. My friend always does our Christmas group pictures like this--he does the timer and then runs in front. I suppose the pictures could come out really funny, but it's worth a try (when the kids aren't home). It's better than the people taking their reflections in the mirror. My ex is an excellent photographer--do you suppose I should ask him to come over & take some pictures? lol

My timer has a 10 second delay--plenty of time to get in the picture.

You'll get the hang of it...no one has to ever see the ones that don't turn out well!

I've been contemplating the same thing. I hid it for a few months while going through a hard time with a family crisis. I also got sick of the same people over and over again. I've been back to the well (OLD) so many times I can't count, but I would really like this time to be different. In other words, I'd like to meet the guy of my dreams! Any encouragement would be great.

But I agree that you should post a few pictures. I have a timer on my camera as well and I've just propped the camera on some books to get the right shot. You should take a lot of them so you have some to choose from.

Good luck!

I suggest a plain wall background. I allows the ability to have only You in the pic. Also full length pics are nice. POF want the face. I do suggest avoiding"professional pics as too many 419's are out there and they steal pics from modeling agencies!

Besides OLD, you might also like to trying meeting people through the website:

Meetups.com

You put in your geographic location, and it shows you which meetup groups are in your area. Some are for singles and some are open to everyone. They have groups for hiking, meeting for coffee, creative writing, dancing, and some are for particular age groups. There are too many to list. Some are free and some require a small fee. I attended some group activities a few times when I was single. I met a lot of nice people, but soon after met my boyfriend on OLD, so no longer need to go to meetups.

Good luck!

My experience of POF has been that without a picture you only get strange (usually married) men contacting you. So a picture is very important.

A way to get a picture without involving anyone who knows you is to go to a tourist site and to ask a perfect stranger to shoot your picture (with your camera) in front of the tourist site. ;)

But I got my daughter to take my picture by saying that we didn't have any recent pictures and I wanted a couple of her and she should take a couple of me. One of these came out quite nicely and I have posted it.

Best wishes for a great new year of OLD!
