It is scary.
I listened to most of that show, but must have missed when they actually found the house - last I heard they were talking about the soccer ball thing. I didn't realize they were actually going to show up there! Was verrrrrry creepy and really makes me glad I don't have kids.
And everyone wonders why I use a fake name to post on Usenet. Ugh.
Good topic, Vexer and it's had me concerned for some time. The Blogging/Electronic Diary/MySpace craze has propelled so many people into posting personal information about themselves for the public to read, and I don't think that many of them really understand how it can hurt them in the future.
Predators go after all age groups so it isn't just ignorant kids who are targets, although that's bad enough. Although it is unlikely that some serial killer is going to target the random blogger (but I wouldn't take that risk anymore than I'd walk in a dark alley alone late at night), potential employers are starting to google prospective new hires. A person may not care about that when he/she is 17, but they sure will when they are trying to get hired in the real world and the employer finds out what a wild partier they are/have been. I work as a background investigator, and I can tell you that it is so easy to get information about people when they post all their personal information voluntarily, and it can really come back to haunt them. It's even easy to get a lot of info when people don't broadcast their private lives but I can't understand why people would voluntarily release the details of their private lives. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned but I don't get this craze at all.
Yeah, I actually rarely listen to that station in the mornings (NOT a fan of Cappy and Tony!) but for whatever reason, it was on that morning and the topic caught my interest - I think they were doing a "best of" while they were on vacation week before last.
