Kinder, Gentler Board...

I've been seeing this phrase used in posts and I just wanted to clarify something (since I am probably one of the ones that is responsible for starting it all)...

I know we had a bit of an "issue" with some abusive posts... This does not mean that we now want the board to become stifled or restrictive in any way, shape or form. While we cannot defend any person who will abuse, belittle or make fun of a poster's issues, that does NOT mean you should bite your tongues to the point of not saying what you think.

Please, say what you mean and mean what you say. Do not bite your tongue or hold your thoughts. The beauty of this board is in its honesty. Just do all of it without being abusive. Personally, I do not want anyone to leave the board because they feel they cannot be heard. And I'm sure we all are in agreement on this. :)

I opened this post to your comments, concerns or questions so please feel free to reply.

I think the main point I was going to make is that not everyone is in agreement that the posts in question were "abusive". So it's hard to know what is ok and what isn't.

I know I don't post on this board very much, but I lurk a lot & find it highly addicitive. :) I personally like the "tell it like it is" style that is usually offered around here. I found it very refreshing when visiting this board for the first time. It was/is a very eye-opening experience! I feel like everyone that posts here has a lot to offer in the way of advice. I would rather be told something straight than have it sugar-coated.

Ok, maybe I'm dense... but when you refer to the powers that be... who are you referring to? Because to me, we as a group make this board...

I'm not sure about other posters, but I guess LG left because he was chastised. He has a great sense of humor (yeah he was sarcastic)and I guess that must've offended someone. I missed it (my computer was down).

Personally I miss him and others with that kind of sense of humor. I don't post as much because I see the same kinds of posts and others are responding. I guess there are alot of newbies posting on the board.

This board is getting somewhat boring (JMHO).

I used that term deliberately and don't feel I can be more specific than that for fear of having my post removed. But I don't mean you personally if that's what you're asking ;-). Feel free to email me through my profile if you like.

Gotcha. So what can we do to make it less boring?

As for LG... I did appreicate his posts and I miss his advice. However, at the same time... he took someone's post and ridiculed it. I don't think that's a kind thing to do. People come here for advice, not for their situations to be made into a joke, you know what I mean? And no one asked him to leave, that was his decision after that post was removed... I personally wished that he would have seen the point of the removal as opposed to taking it to the extreme. :)

I definitely welcome your thoughts on how we can improve... So please lay it on us!

There are evidently people who are just too sensitive and take the most mundane things as a personal attack. This is all across iV. The criteria for a warning is too subjective, and although I haven't tracked whose posts are deleted, there appears to be more leniency towards paying members. I've seen outright NASTY name calling not get pulled, but a little bluntness or sarcasm is punished. There's no doubt in my mind that some CM's have favorites who get away with grey area posts, and others get slammed for things that don't even cross the line.

Now, I wonder how long this post will last before it's pulled? And if it IS pulled, I won't be back. It'll be proof to you all that no one dare question the iV thought police.
