Long distance

Hi, I just joined this board but have been online dating off and on for about a year now. I have been e-mailing a man I met on an online dating site and really like him. The only problem is that he lives in Ottawa while I live in New York City. We're both young, but we both have jobs in our respective cities and I don't know when we could stay together in the near future. I know I don't know him well enough to think of a serious relationship, but I wanted to know if anyone has gotten into a relationship with someone they had met on the internet who lived in another city, and how it worked out. Should I even think of starting something when he lives that far away? Thanks!

I think it all depends on the two people, if they would be willing to re-locate in the end should the relationship turn serious, and if both are willing to put in the effort to see each other and stay in touch. Before you get too serious, I would discuss with him expectations you both have of what you need to be fulfilled in the relationship. Can both of you be happy seeing each other once a month? Twice a month? etc.. Communication is very important.
I dated someone long distance from the net but unfortunately, he just wasn't as willing to see me as much as I needed to see him to feel content. If someone is crazy enough about you though, they'll make the effort. I have a friend who met her husband out of town and he drove about 6 hours each way EVERY weekend to be with her. He also proposed to her about 7 months later.
