also new to online dating. The idea of this intrigues and scares me. Could you give me some ideas of where/how to start? What (free) sites are good places to begin? I travel frequently and meeting someone to simply meet for drinks/coffee is difficult much less an actual relationship!! I hope my questions don't sound dorky!!

Hi and welcome. The only completely free site I know of is Craig's List, but I would emphatically NOT recommend that to someone who is new to online dating (OLD)...it's a black diamond, expert's only run, LOL.
That said, you can post free profiles on any number of sites. Mydate.com lets you say in your profile that you are not a member (most other sites don't) and if someone who IS a member emails you, you can respond without having to pay. On some of the other sites like Yahoo and Match, some people who are members are savvy about emailing you and putting their email address in their email to you so you can reply.
But, at the end of the day, I think if you're serious about trying to meet someone, you need to pick a site and join for at least a month.
If you'd like help with your profile, we're pretty good about giving feedback!

I have found that you (usually) get what you pay for, including OLD. The free sites and trials are good for messing around, but if you want the real stuff, I have had much better experiences with paid memberships. I have done friendfinder and am now on eharmony. There are not tons of matches, but so far they are of a higher quality....
Tips:
Don't give your phone number or private email for several dates.
Meet in public places that you are very familiar with.
Always make sure someone knows where you are going/who/what time, etc.
Just my opinion....I am very cautious.

Hi Julianna and welcome!
You'll find a lot of advice here and many folks who will try to help you in your online dating (OLD) adventures. Hopefully, you'll find a safe haven here to ask questions as well as help others.
As for the free sites, you can try webdate.com. I disagree about craig's list being for experienced online daters. Craig's list, just like any other sites will have its mix of good people and crazies. I think the trick is in being careful with how you meet and date. Follow the standard rules of always meeting in public, never relying on the person for transportation and take the
