OLD-Fest Chicago 2005

It looks like the tally is in and the weekend of May 13-15 is the winner.

Anyone who's planning, even potentially/tentatively, on joining the group, please let me know by the end of this week via e-mail at mystreamofunconsciousness@yahoo.com. Include the e-mail address you'd like to be contacted at so I'll be able to send the group info. off the OLD Board.

I'm planning on trying to get a discounted room block at one of the downtown hotels and will need to let them know how many room nights I will be needing for the group, hence the need for the information.

Any suggestions on activities would be welcome as well, since I'm not sure what each of you digs or don't digs! Here's a website that's worth a peek for Chicago stuff, www.metromix.com.

It is absolutely hysterical. Tix are around $40. If any guys join us I don't think they'd be too hip on it--because it really is a bunch of swinging thingees!

OK kids, we have a bit of a problem with our dates. It seems that there are two back-to-back citywide conventions the weekends of the 13th and the 20th of May, which means the hotel prices are through the roof ($275-300 on average for a downtown or city hotel).

Do we want to pick a different weekend---I know there's nothing going on the first weekend of May, but I'm not sure about June.

What were the rates that weren't on the convention weekend? Does it have to be downtown?

Yikes! June doesn't work for me so I'd be interested in the first weekend in May as an alternative.

And personally if I'm coming to Chicago I'd want to be downtown not in a burb. In any case, my experience with citywides is that even the places outside of downtown are full or more expensive than they would normally be.

It doesn't have to be, but if it's in the suburbs, then there's the need for transportation to get into the city which is fairly expensive unless the hotels are accessible to the "L".

Rates will vary on non-convention weekends, but typically run between $129 and $179; the near suburbs aren't that much different in pricing, the far suburbs (an hour or so away from the city) are less expensive.

I may consider doing this because I've never been to Chicago (but I've been to NYC) and it sounds like fun. I checked out ticket prices on Southwest and they run about $160 for a round trip from Houston or Austin to Midway. So you're saying a hotel room costs $129 a night downtown? Yikes. How about a Motel 6 on the fringes of town? ;-)

TT, if you want the fringes of Chicago, you'd be about 2 hours outside of the city!!!

$129 is on the lower end of pricing downtown Chicago and is pretty inexpensive for a decent hotel in an area where women would be safe at whatever time of night.

I don't even know if there are any Motel 6's leaving the lights on in this city! ;)

Shows how much I know about Chicago... But it only takes 20 minutes to drive through Austin so I have alot to learn. I guess it's not that bad since it's only a few nights. But I'm just so used to getting a 4-day package to Vegas (with hotel) for $350.

OK, I KNOW that I am the brokest of all of you, being a 33 year old full-time college student-LOL.So do I need to start saving pennies now to be in a hotel where I don't have to worry about getting my throat slit walking around at night? If we don't have any big, strong men with us(wink, wink),then I'm willing to scrimp to be in a safe part of town :) Am I even allowed at this partay since I'm a newbie? :) greeneye1971
