I'm so disappointed that I didn't see every movie this year. I'm actually disgusted with myself - I should have at least seen "Ray", ya know? I really wanted to see "Sideways" before tonight too. The only one I saw was "Million Dollar Baby" and of course, I want that one to win all it was nominated for.
What are your predictions? I think it would be cool if Jamie Foxx won both of awards he's nominated for but I didn't that "Collateral" movie either. It sounds like all the buzz is about him - that's for sure.

That's funny...I only saw Sideways, and I want *it* to win everything it was nominated for! It's strange the way that works.

I was watching "Sunday Morning" like I do every Sunday morning and they were doing a story on the popularity of that movie. Now I HAVE to see it! The movie is set in my old stomping grounds in California. I did not know that til this morning. Now I'm even more irritated I haven't seen it.

Now the best movie I saw this year was Merchant of Venice. It was superior and the acting was so good – it pulled you right in. Amazing movie but it will never be mentioned at Oscars or anywhere else because of its controversy. What a shame. If an Academy screens movies based on their “political appropriateness” we will miss many outstanding films.
Well, I saw all 5 Best Pics, all 5 Best Actors, 4 of the 5 Best Actress and all 5 Supporting in both except 1 in each. I feel pretty educated in it - here are my predictions and sentimental faves:
Picture
Prediction - The Aviator (it was too long and my least favorite of the 5 but I have this sad feeling it will win)
Sentimental - MDB (I really hope that what some are saying is right and it will win)
Lead Actor
Prediction - Jamie Foxx (not a great movie but he BECAME Ray Charles)
Sentimental - Don Cheadle (he was incredible)
Lead Actress
Prediction - Hilary Swank
Sentimental - Hilary Swank (she was AWESOME!)
Supp Actor
Prediction - Morgan Freeman
Sentimental - tie between Morgan Freeman and Thomas Hayden Church from Sideways
Supp Actress
Prediction - Cate Blanchett (again, BECAME Katherine Hepburn and that is a TOUGH role to play being an American icon)
Sentimental - Virginia Madsen (she went from being in the Lifetime Movie of the Week a couple years ago to this great role in a great movie - I wish she'd win, but she won't)
I am off to see one more today - get in a last minute flick! :-)
I didn't get to see any of the movies yet. :( Vexer did a really good job of making picks, though. I really want to see MDB now. I didn't get to see Jamie Foxx in "Ray" but I did see him in "Collateral" and he was very good.
On a side note I was surprised the girl from "The Village" was not at least nominated for best actress. I thought she was exceptional. Maybe it's because the best actress & actor awards generally come from movies that are also critically acclaimed, and "The Village" was not.
I saw 4 of the 5 Best Picture nominees before last night (still have to see Finding Neverland) and have to say, I was extrememly disappointed in Million Dollar Baby. I *wanted* to like it...but I never found myself emotionally engaged by the characters (although I love the actors and have really liked the other movies Clint has directed). All 3 of us who went to see it were like, what's all the fuss about? I heard people crying around me, and normally I cry at the drop of a hat, but I was totally unmoved. OTOH, I *really* liked the Aviator, and wasn't expecting to (not a Leonardo fan). I wasn't bored for a minute even though it was long, while with MDB, I kept looking at my watch.
Was glad to see Sideways get best screenplay, at least. That was my favorite (even though I found it depressing), but I knew it wouldn't win.
So, now to the good stuff: dresses! My faves were Halle Berry, Natalie Portman and Hillary Swank. Renee Zellweger looked TERRIBLE, IMO, and what was Scarlet Johanson (sp?) thinking with her hair like that???

Really? That is interesting because I was exactly the opposite. I loved MDB. I was one of those ones sobbing in the theater and it stuck with me for so long afterward b/c the content was so powerful. I thought all the actors were incredible. They pulled me in and made me care about what was going on.
And I didn't like the Aviator and the more I go along, the less I like it. I was bored and looking at my watch to see when it would be over. It was WAY too long and while some of the performances were good, it just didn't do it for me. When it started winning the early awards, I was worried it would win the big ones but was really happy when it didn't.
I was also glad that the screenplay awards were for the more obscure films (Sideways and Eternal Sunshine). It looks like they finally credited good writing and a good story instead of just the biggest blockbuster or the same thing they went for with best picture.
I thought Hillary Swank looked awesome. And yes, Renee Zellweger looked awful - too pale, too skinny and that hair looks awful with her skin. Her dress was pretty but too long and cumbersome. I loved Scarlet J.'s dress tho. I also thought Kate Winslet looked lovely and that Charlize Theron looked like a fluffy wedding cake - not a good thing.
That is interesting! What really surprised me at my own reactions was that I thought (from the reviews, etc) that I'd love MDB and not really like the Aviator...and it ended up being the reverse.
I was very glad that Eternal Sunshine got best original screenplay also...I really liked that movie.
Agree that Scarlett J's dress was great...I just couldn't figure out what up with her hair! Agree on both Kate Winslet and Charlize Theron, too.
