Hi all,
Does anyone have experience with Plenty of Fish, the free online dating service?
I'm over 50 and have been actively been pursuing OLD for about a month with less than satisfactory results. Had a few email exchanges, a couple of almost meets, and a bit of frustration. I like to be optimistic about this for a woman my age. I live in the Washington, DC area, so you'd think there'd be somewhat of an interesting pool of men who would actually like to follow up and actually meet and date. Am I dreaming?
Anyone have suggestions for other good dating sites to try? I've been doing Yahoo, Matchmaker and Perfectmatch (not working at all well).
Thanks!
Judy

Wow, that makes 3 professed over45 DCers on this board. Maybe we should start a club!
Thanks for mentioning CL again, icarrie. I've noticed that people on this board use it often. Have to admit I've been leary of it. But all of you here on the board are pretty savvy, so I may have to give CL a try.
I looked up Meetup for Washington, DC and there's just tons of offerings for more interests than you can imagine--for the city and the VA (where I live) and MD suburbs. I've already signed up for an over40 dining out group, and I'm eyeing a writing group.
I recommend checking it out.
I'm 46 and although I'm not as familiar with Plenty of Fish as Match and Yahoo, I did meet a guy who had a profile on Plenty of Fish but he also had his profile on Yahoo, which is how I corresponded with him to begin with. He had a photo on Plenty but didn't on Yahoo, so he told me to go there to see his photo. The guy was nice enough but came on too strong, too needy, and I was not physically attracted to him whatsoever.
I have met men I was very interested in from Match and Yahoo (mostly Yahoo) and so far, I have only had disappointments with it. My subscription to Yahoo ran out at the end of December, but I met and corresponded with a guy I was interested in but who apparently is not interested enough to make time to actually see me again. He has called quite often in between, but after tiring of him putting me off about meeting again, I wrote a nice e-mail telling him my thoughts about things at this point. I'm prepared to not hear from him again. Frankly, it was becoming too much work worrying about whether he was going to call and if or when we'd see each other again (he lives 2 hrs. away). I was pretty certain that a long distance thing would not work as none of my past experiences have, but this guy seemed more interested than some and has kept up communication which is more than I can say for some of the rest. However, I don't need a phone buddy for months on end.
This is the thing with OLD, you will meet men who seem to play their cards right in the beginning, you can have the most fantastic date, great phone conversations and witty e-mails all for the guy to backpeddle when you actually broach the subject of seeing them again or perhaps even having a relationship with the guy. That is the reason most of us have profiles online, so that we can meet someone who will stick around and not vanish after one or two dates. I have always said that game playing should be left to the 20-something crowd--not people in their 40's and 50's. Surprise, surprise....mature men STILL play games and the one I've been dealing with has been doing just that. It takes guts to call someone on their ill-manners though or to lay things out without sounding harsh. The best advice is what I have read on this board many many times. If the guy is not treating you right or is stringing you along, be willing to let him go. It's hard to keep starting over, but I've done it a number of times and so have the majority of people on this board. It's just hard to understand when we are dealing with men our age who "should" know better in how to treat a woman.
Keep us posted and good luck.
