How did you get started meeting people online?

I kept seeing ads for online dating everywhere - on t.v., pop-up ads, in my email inbox. Curiosity got the better of me and I started browsing some of them. One day I decided to try posting an ad. That same day I was contacted by someone, which was so exciting since I hadn't had a date in over a year.

When I first started online dating I went out with pretty much anyone who contacted me. Of course, I did weed out the ones who seemed a little "off." But even if someone didn't seem all that attractive to me I decided to just see what happens. I didn't get very far with anyone and began to dread the first meetings because I fully expected to be disappointed.

I stopped online dating for about a year and then started up again 6 months ago. I am much more selective now and only actually met one person face-to-face. We dated 2 1/2 months before it ended.

Last fall, I had just stopped seeing a guy and was lamenting to my friends how disappointed I was things hadn't worked out w/him and how hard it was to meet new guys. One of my friends who had tried online dating in the past and had a long-term relationship w/a guy she'd met online suggested that I try it. I resisted at first, but one night I decided to check out some of the sites. I was surprised to see that the people I saw seemed normal and attractive, but even then it took me awhile to sign up. When I did, I didn't post my own profile for awhile - I just wrote to guys. After awhile, I posted a profile w/no photo; it took me awhile to add a photo. I guess I was a pretty slow convert to online dating, LOL. I'm glad I did it though! I met my current bf online, we've been dating almost 3 months and are very happy! :-)

We moved to a house, my little brother and I, and we got a computor with it. I had watched a few chat rooms before this and thought, heck, lets give it a try. There was no one i wanted to get to know in town, so why not.

Meeting my husband was a result of chatting, so kinda cool i think lol

My friends were using on line dating services, and with respect to ivillage when I stopped using the dating service several years ago when I became exclusive with someone I stumbled on ivillage and saw it as an alternative way to enjoy online contact with people while not doing it for the purpose of dating or meeting men.
