Showing "Online" on Dating Sites

I've noticed on Match.com that it shows people supposedly "online". I've been told that that isn't accurate and that the "last time logged on" on yahoopersonals is not correct either. And if I'm still on someone's yahoo messenger, wouldn't it also show them online on my messenger if they were? That has happened with people that I know I'm still on their messenger list, but it shows them "online" on Match at times they aren't likely to be home or online at all. Is there any way to know for sure? Just wondering.

I'm bumping this up as it got lost in the threads. I'm still confused if the "online" status is accurate or not with Match and Yahoopersonals.

Match is like that, if someone has DSL it could very well show them online all day.

Also match often has a section checked off to "log you in" when you come on the computer, I noticed that I was logged in however I was at work so I had a bunch of messages when I got home basically pissy because i didn't respond to them. So there are gliches, human error etc.

I wouldn't go by those things and why bother trying to figure it out. If I'm on messenger I'll IM someone if they aren't available they will IM me when they can, I don't stress about it.

I'm just confused with the whole thing. If Match is showing someone "online" if you click on it, what happens. Can you tell what a newbie I am? LOL

That's the other bad thing about Match, NOTHING happens if you click on it, even if you are both paying members. You still have to get on each other's messenger program by adding each other the normal way, so I don't understand the point of it saying they're online regardless.

So in other words if I wanted to message (chat) someone I met online I would have to get their id from them through corresponding by email through Match?

LOL I'm so computer illiterate!

You can instant message someone via the Yahoopersonals web site as long as you are a paying member (I think that is right), but I have not found a way to do that through Match unless you e-mail or talk and get their ID info to add them to your messenger account. Someone correct me if I am wrong on this.

I have tried in the past to log off from Match and then search for myself (just wanted to see my profile from other people's view). It actually shows that I am online while I had in fact logged off. The logical explanation would be that the software that checks for user status isn't constantly running (a common scenario - for example for yahoo emails, even if you close the browser, you'd still be logged on for some period of time).

I assumed that "online now" simply shows that you are on your computer, not necessarily on their site.
