Speaking of tonight's chat......
| Mon, 02-21-2005 - 9:32am |
Last week, I couldn't get into the chat. I have never had a problem before. The only thing that's changed is that one of the I/S guys from work did me a favor and cleaned up my computer and installed Windows XP (I had Windows 98)
When I got to the chat window, I could see who was chatting, but all I got was a little box with a little red X in it. It appeared that the chat software was not connecting.
Can anyone give me any ideas how to fix this before tonight?
Many thanks......ABM

Hi ABM:
Here's the email I received from iVillage Tech Support for the same problem:

Hello,
We recommend the latest version of Internet Explorer to use our chat rooms. HTML chat is no longer used; we are now supporting only the Java Chat version of Prospero Chat. You can upgrade your browser and download a clean copy of Sun's Java with the following pages below.
Microsoft Internet Explorer
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp
Sun's Java
http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/02.jsp
If you are using an AOL Browser: Try switching to Internet Explorer-- minimize your AOL browser so you can still stay connected to the internet.
If you still have trouble, please provide us with as much detail as possible so that we may assist you.

A Million Thanks Lisa,
I will give this a try. I WAS using AOL, so I will do those downloads and back into the chat via Internet Explorer. Let's see if that works!
ABM
Mine works now that I downloaded Java. See ya tonight!
Lisa
Yeah!!
I'm so happy to hear that you finally
I will either be late for chat or miss it altogether, as I have a "first meeting" at 5 PM Pacific time. I thought we were meeting for coffee but it morphed into meeting for dinner instead, which I'm not psyched about but it would have been awkward to back out at that point.
If things don't go anywhere with this guy or the guy I met yesterday (who seems cool and said he wanted to go out again, but of course we'll see if that actually happens), then I'm almost positive I will take a break. I don't have anyone else in the queue, so to speak, so I may as well.
Sheri
Well, on the one hand I hope you make it tonight . On the other hand I hope you don't .
Good luck!
Liiiiisssaaaaa????
Those links don't work. And, I discovered that I don't seem to have Internet Explorer anymore. I click on the icon, but nothing happens. I have an IM out to Ernie (my I/S guy) but he hasn't responded yet. Hopefully, I can get this working before 9:00, or I won't be able to be there :-(
ABM
She's using A-O-Hell.
ABM, what you need to do is quit using those MSIE browsers (AOL's browser uses MSIE) entirely and go download Firefox. Go to www.getfirefox.com and download/install that program. It should be able to install just fine and it won't mess up your AOL and/or IE either; it's just going to be additional.
The other thing you should do is go to www.java.com and be sure that you have the latest version of the Java software. You can get it at http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and the odds are you want to use the Windows distribution. If you think you already have the latest/greatest Java download, you can test it by going to www.java.com and seeing what comes up in the right-hand side of the page, just down below the search box. If it says "you've got the latest" you're covered.
Finally, once you start running Firefox (which is a great way for non-members to read iVillage boards- you can call up the main page, then once you've logged in you can right-click on each topic and say "open in new tab" to read new messages) you might need to turn Java on. Go to Tools > Options > Web Features and be sure that the boxes for Java and Javascript are clicked/selected.
I hope this gets you turned on, so to speak. :)
