What do you do?

Is that really a horrible thing to ask? Everyone says it looks like the asker is only interested in money, but in my case, my job is my life, so I'm always curious what others do. Is there a better way to phrase it so I don't look like a gold digger?

I think it's a perfectly natural question to ask. Anyone who'd take offense to the question probably has issues.
When I'm starting to talk to someone it seems that it comes up quite naturally, usually after exchanging questions about what the other person does for fun or on the weekends. You can usually grab onto something that'll move the conversation into how they spend the rest of their week. If they're vague about it then that could be a red flag.
I've used this before: "so...what's a typical day like for you?"

I think it is normal to ask someone what they do. WHAT they do is not quite the important thing to me, but is it a "field" that they have been in for a great length of time? Is it something they enjoy? Is it something they specifically CHOSE to do, not just a "j-o-b". I think it's all normal... it's not asking for a W-2 or a paystub... Mike and I have been together for 2 days shy of a year now, and I STILL don't know (and at the moment, don't need to know, although the future planning talk are getting much more serious lately)exactly HOW much he makes. I know that he loves what he does, he is very successful at it, even just day-to-day talking about it shows his commitment to it, although he's not a work-a-holic.
