When should you meet in person?

Hi, I am new to online dating, and met a guy online a little over a month ago. We progressed from emails to phone calls in the last couple weeks. We email each other every day throughout the workday and talk almost every other day. I think we both feel some kind of connection. The thing is, he lives on the other side of the country.

We have both brought up the topic of meeting casually but not really pursued it further (we have not set up an actual plan for meeting.)

If this guy were local we would have met weeks ago! But, since meeting him will require the time and the funds and the travel & coordination, it is not an easy task.

How do I know when it's the right time to meet? Should I initiate the discussion of meeting, and if so, how?

Thanks for your expertise! I feel totally lost in this arena :(

When to meet in person varies for each individual....but for me personally, I like to exchange a few emails (nothing long), move it to the phone and set up a meet for within 2 weeks of the online introduction. Anything beyond than that time frame, my mind starts conjuring up images of how I think the guy will be- which aren't always accurate.

Also, meeting relatively quickly keeps the door open for other potentially suitable matches, as opposed to prolonging the anticipation of meeting a fellow who really wasn't my type to begin with.

Email is one thing and phone is another. But meeting in person is really where it's at. I've been surprised each and every time I've met someone in person that they are not quite what I was expecting. Both good and bad :)

I usually like to limit myself to my metro area just for that reason.
