Best phrase to let a man down easy?

  • I'm sorry, it's just not working
  • You are a great guy, but it doesn't feel right
  • I'd love to be your friend
  • I've had a great time with you, but you're not the one for me
  • I've decided to get back together with my ex
  • I have decided to take a break from dating
  • We are just not a good match
  • You are a loser and I'm outta here
  • None of the above - it's not possible to let someone down easy

Yeah, I've made that mistake, too.

I said "you are so handsome and I'm so attracted to you, but..." to the last guy I ended it with. Better than, "you're a great guy, but..." ??

I started this thread because I have had to let down a few guys recently - mostly people that I saw only once or twice but kept pursuing me. The guy in the above example lasted about 5 weeks.

None of the phrases I have used seem to be any better than the others. I feel like, no matter what you say, the guy hears: "You suck" -- and that's not true with any of the men I've seen recently. They just weren't quite the right fit for ME.

When I was younger, I never did the breaking up. Either the guy did, or I just let things fizzle and die a natural death. I'm finding it really hard to be the one who has to say "you're not the one" - but I also don't want to waste a guy's time (or mine) if it's not there.

How about: "It's not me. It's you."?

(Yes, I'm kidding).
