Last night I came home around seven and the sink was making a funny gurgling noise. I looked in it, I ran the garbage disposal, no problemo.

Around 10, I watched the much-awaited Downton Abbey that I'd recorded. At midnight, I took my little stockinged feet down the hall and -- SQUISH!!!! There was 1.5 inches of standing water...on my carpet.

Once, about eight or so years ago I lived in a basement studio apartment. I was playing around on the computer around 8pm (probably here) and listening to the rain coming down outside. That is, until I heard a loud gush and realized it wasn't raining outside at all. It was raining in my closet. By the time I heard the gush, there was a good two inches of water in the entryway and the ceiling had caved in the doorway of the closet (hence the gush). Fortunately, maintenance came out right away and stopped the leak (the neighbor's a/c) and placed a large barrel to catch any more water in the doorway of the closet. They sucked up as much water as possible, but didn't replace the old ugly carpet.

A couple of months later, I came home to find the dishwasher spewing water and the same area flooded again, but this time it had reached my furniture. The pipe had frozen and busted. It had warmed up that day, so I came home to the great flood. That maintenance guy wasn't even going to shop vac the carpet!! It was 5pm and he wanted to go home. I told him that I have asthma and horrible allergies and if mold started to grow I'd get very sick and I'd be sure to report that to management. He cleaned it up real quick.

I could tell more stories of that apartment, but I won't. It was the place from hell!

Hopefully you'll get nice, new carpet with no damage to your stuff.

In the clarity of morning, I'm wondering why in the heck it's going to take FOUR days to replace the carpet.

do you have anyone that could "apartment sit" while the work is being done, just so they know someone is watching them?

I would be happy to volunteer, but I can;t get there that fast :P

oh; good idea.. couldnt DD stay there while you are gone?

I would be a bit anxious too about the stuff.. Can you put things away somewhere else behind a locked closed closet or door?

the most valuable precious thing I own right now are a set of LLADRO elephants.. Mama, Papa and baby.. I got that piece in Spain and it remains at my ex marital home with ex because I have no safe place to put it.. THe piece was 1,000 ..Not much to some people but hey it came all the over from Spain..

One day I went back to the house and the piece was missing.. Ex has a lot of grand kids so he put the piece away high on a shelf in the closet.. Thank God
