I would just like to say that football is evil.

Last night, I had to wait for San Francisco to beat Denver before we could get going for NYE.

Oh, bummer for you! I am not much of a football fan. I'm mildly interested when the Titans are doing well, but they blew it yesterday.

Maybe you guys can tivo the superbowl? Stay away from tv's, radio's, and sports bars until after you've celebrated and he has a chance to watch it? Nahhhh, that probably won't be happening from what I've heard of T. Sorry! Yeah, evil.

Cl-Shywon,

This reminds me of a movie I watched on Foxtel recently with Drew Barrymore called Fever Pitch where she was dating a man obsessed with the Red Socks. Different sport I know but same premise. I tend to steer clear of sports fanatics. I wouldn't date someone who placed me second to a football match.

Yeah, I doubt that'll be happening.

Being in your 30's is the greatest! I spend most of my twenties worried about turning thirty and when I turned thirty, I felt the freedom that I should have had in my twenties!

Really? I hated turning 29 more than turning 30. Twenty-nine was a toughie for me.

I bought a turning 30 b-day card for a friend not too long ago and on the inside, it said: "Welcome to a brand new, bright and shiny decade".

Welcome, Shy!!! Op, nevermind, I'll welcome you on Superbowl Sunday.

I would have to agree with the other posters about turning 30. I really thought that this was one of my favorite b-days and loved it. It kind of made me think that I have a new decade to start over and a new, more wise and mature person to become. Sometimes I do wish I was in my 20s again so I can have my youthful appearance back but honestly I am so much better off with what I know now than I did in my early to mid-20s. So look forward to 30, it's a good age.
As far as the football thing, I feel for ya. I dated some football fanatics in my time and it annoyed me to no end really. I usually just told them that they can watch their football and i would just go shopping and do my own thing but it really did bother me and sometimes I would nag. The last couple of guys I have been with have not been sports fanatics at all and it's been refreshing, although my previous boyfriend was too much of a computer geek which bugged me to no end as well. I believe everything in moderation and we shouldn't be addicted to anything really and keep a healthy balance.

hey, feisty,
what do you do if your only brother and only sibling is a football fanatic who places sports over family?

I've decided that if the USC-Clemson game falls on the Sat after Thanksgiving, then I am not going to spend $500 for a plane ticket to sit on the sofa being quiet with the football game on for my brother.

With regards to relationships, where you choose the guy, I agree with you - give up the sports guy or he has to bend and give up the sports. I think it's easier to get rid of the guy, than to pull him away from the game.

With regards to Superbowl and birthday combo....for a sports nut, the only thing to do would be to celebrate on an alternate day for your birthday. There's no substitute for watching the game in real time for the sports nuts which means no tivo or whatever.

it is a crummy situation to be in if you really LOVE the guy. good luck

Ethniccook,

See, this is where it gets dicey because I'm Australian and I can only speak from my experience. Australia is sports mad but I don't think we allow sport to dominate our lives as much as it appears that Americans do. The only time where it may be different is the World Cup but that only comes around every four years and being a soccer fan myself, I understand that completely. Everyone in my family, workplace and friends stayed up and watched Australia play in the World Cup last year but this is the first time Australia had qualified since 1974 so it was quite a historical moment for us. I would not be understanding of a boyfriend who expected me to work our social lives around him watching sport. I don't think I could be fall in love with someone like that because I think it's selfish to put sport over celebrating your partner's birthday. Everyone is different but men like that do not appeal to me at all.

yep, you are right, it is selfish, but from what I know about the sports nuts out here/there, the only options are to a) learn to like the game just as much (which in my case, my brother hopes that I will one day look forward to watching football in silence over holidays - is he crazy?!!) or b) have an alternate date/plan and c) get rid of the sports nut (if you can)!

I'm curious to hear what the original post person's plan/outcome is. I hope she keeps us posted (pun not intended).
