"Friends" . . . what does that mean?

We all have said or will say this after a break up. We say "Can we still be friends?" As a lady, what does it mean when you say this?

When I have said that (and it is rare) it depends on the circumstances - sometimes it means can we talk often, sometimes it is just a cliche that means we will be civil to each other if we run into each other. My guess is that there are many definitions and it is impossible to generalize other than to say that "friends" typically means no sexual contact.

Depends on what r/ship I have with the person.

If we've been hanging out and I say I want to be friends, I am saying there is nothing romantic happening for me. If its an xbf, then I am saying I'd like to keep in touch occasionally. Like the odd email when something big happens - or going for coffee to catch up when we bump into each other. Most of my breakups have been amicable so its not like I dislike any of them. We just weren't destined to be together...

here's how us guys interpret it:

"I'm too cowardly to say 'I don't want to see you anymore' out loud, so I'm hoping that by saying 'let's be friends' that you'll get the message."
