Do you ever apply standards to friends the way you do for men you'd date?

I expect a whole lot more from someone I'm dating rather than someone I'm just friends with.

I've got close friends who drink wayyyyy too much on a regular basis, still do drugs (nothing TOO heavy), sleep around (unattached), aren't necessarily interested in the things I'm interested in, don't bother to pay their bills, etc. But we're still friends - their habits or interests haven't affected my friendship with them.

However, I couldn't *date* a guy who presented these traits (or the lack thereof). It's the intimate involvement. If I can't respect someone, I can't be intimate on any level with them. And for me, that's the difference.

I agree with emdeesa on this - I have friends who have traits I would not want in a significant other, but I am still friends with them.
