I've never been the girl who goes to get her hair done on a regular basis.

I've only done the wash-out kind on my hair, but I've never had any problem with it.
One of my best friend's is a red head and she used to do the "dye in a box" solution, but she only regreted it later on the down the road. Either it would fade out too easily or it just didn't look right. She nows goes to the salon when she wants a color done. Because she is a red head, she sometimes goes lighter or darker, whichever mood she is in.
I know w/me personally, I'm a brunette and have blonde hi-lights and I only get my hi-lights done once every four months maybe. Just depends on how fast your color goes out. I used to get my whole head of hair dyed, but I got tired of the upkeep and maintenance of getting your roots done all the time. So I opted out for hi-lights instead and I like that route better.
You're all right, I need to stop being such a tight-wad and just go to the salon.

I think red is one of the hardest colors to get right - I wouldn't trust the boxes.
I dyed my hair myself for about a year. I am a natural blonde, but I went "more blonde" for awhile. Like a PP said, it looked cute the first few times, but started looking washed out and dry after awhile. I have been all natural for 5+ years, and I prefer it.
I always think someone's natural color really looks best, but sometimes highlights or lowlights

Another natural redhead, delurking to encourage you to hit the salon and get some highlights...AND lowlights!
I can only afford to do it every 4 months, too.
Red is really hard color to do any kind of color to because of the pigmentation.
