I've been on the pill for over 10 years and last year I got all freaked out (self imposed) that having been on it so long I was ruining my chances of ever getting pregnant (even though I'm not sure if I want to or not some day). So I stopped taking it and my periods were CRAZY. Lots more bleeding, cramps, insane pms, bleed for like 7 days - I was miserable. I went one more month and then went back on the pill. Makes me wonder how I'll do it if I do want to go off to get pregnant - I'll be a bear!
I don't recall any spotting or random bleeding though.
I went off the pill for a few months and was miserable. I had this idea in my head though that I wanted to go for a few months with no chemicals, etc. in my body. A detox, I guess, since I had been on some other medications recently as well. The cramps and the moodiness was horrible though, not to mention the cravings so I went back to the doc and got on a super low-dose pill. That way, I have a few "helper" hormones but not too many. Anyway, when I went off, my periods were heavier, cramps were worse, etc. but I pretty much stayed on schedule and didn't have any surprises. I think it's smart to go off when you're cycle is ending rather than stopping in the middle. That should help you stay on schedule and avoid random spotting, etc.
Honey, have you been diagnosed with anything? you know, endo, PID, PCOS, etc? With the cramping you mentioned i can recall so many times i endured plenty of buckle over scsreaming in pain days at work and the continuous 20 day bleeding instead of a 7 day cycle...or even a skip of no-bleed days for a period of time then spots of a day or two and nothing again for a month then a 14 day bleed cycle. IT SUCKS!!!
I had ovarian cysts that kept on growing even after the laps/DnC's i had. No anti-biotic or BC pills would curb anything for me and i finally convinced my " by the book" doctor to take everything out. I had a hysto in 2001 and i am so greatful for it. The only pains i have to endure now are those i get from my IBS(irritable bowel syndrome), which is severely minor compared to those days i suffered with a period that would never stop or not come at all. I was 34 when i had my hysto and i have no regrets. I recommend it.
As for my days i was taking the pill...i cant recall ever having any withdrawel symptoms, i never had the chance since 3 weeks after discontinuing use i got preggers. that was 11 years ago.
Shywon, whatever you decide you must decide what is best for you, even if your doc is against it...if you push for what you feel is best for you the doc will eventually givein to you. After all you are the patient and you pay him to listen to you. Sometimes docs do not know best.
I will pray for you. God Bless, Blessed Be,etc and good luck.
After taking the pill for over a decade, I was also nervous about going off of them. I had stopped taking the pill briefly in my mid-twenties and experienced really bad cramping (like I had before taking the pill). When I went off the pill for good at 30, things were much better, minor PMS only immediately. I would guess that each woman's reaction will differ depending on her own body chemistry and what specific pill they were taking. I would expect any discomforts such as cramping, heavy bleeding, mood swings, etc that were alleviated by the pill to come back.
Based on my personal experience, I'm not so sure that going off the pill briefly and then back on is the greatest thing. While my cycle returned to normal immediately it was clear that my body's overall equilibrium took longer to reestablish itself. I developed bad acne for over 6 months, and it took a year for it to entirely clear up (I was on the pill that helps with acne).
I loved the pill when I was on it, but having gone off it, I doubt I will ever take them again.
The only thing I've been officially diagnosed with is IBS, which I'm convinced is just a way of saying they know something's wrong, but they aren't sure what's causing it.
GIRL, Now that u have elaborated a bit more i have to agree with your docs....I have IBS,severely and i stay away from trigger foods, spicey and acidic ones(even acidic fruits). Well, IBS is no laughing matter nor should you just srug it off and say your docs are wrong.
I have been dealing with ibs for many years and i can tell you i cannot eat breakfast without tossing it up within half an hour afterwards, so i no longer eat in the am. I have tummy cramps that are so painful at times i cry and scream, then minutes later i am in the bathroom with hershey squirts that keep me there for an hour, sometimes longer.
I belong to an ibs site that has helped me alot with food preparation and all sorts of other alternative ways of treating the disease. YES, it is a disease, treatable but it sure is not fun. I miss the hamburgers, i miss steaks, i miss oranges, grapefruits, lemons, limes, salsa, hotsauce, chili, etc, etc.
The food list is different for everyone who has ibs. My mom cant eat lettuce and onion, but i can with out repercussions. IBS, is said to be a stress disease. i believe it is a combo of stress, heredity/genes, and the bodies chemical imbalance as we age.
I do not have the website on the tip of my fingers so i have to go look it up in my email and i will come back here and post it for you.
The best product i have incorporated into my diet for IBS has been SOY products. Though they are expensive i try to keep them in my weekly lunch n dinner at least 3 times a week.
Let me also add another scary thought, especially if you have young children.IBS shortens a persons lifespan by 20 years. NO JOKE!!! Please never say a doctor is wrong if he thinks you have and diagnoses you with IBS.

Actually, the information I have read says that IBS does not shorten lifespan or lead to any other diseases.
