That is one thing that I don't miss about retail - the young part time help. Oy. Sunday I went to the Art Institute with my ex. I went outside to wait for him to use the facilities and I was sitting on the steps of the museum enjoying a cigarette. There were about 8 people with anti-Bush signs just being quiet and walking back and forth on Michigan Avenue. Then the Bears fans from the game that had just let out started streaming up the street and I knew that trouble was brewing.
Full disclosure: I am conservative and tend to vote Republican. Anyway, these two men who I would place in their late 50s or early 60s (and I would bet any amount of money are veterans) started to argue with the protestors. I never see that here. It's such a blue city and those of us with red state views tend to not bother. I thought it was going to come to blows at one point. One of the older guys said to this young man holding a sign saying that Bush is a fascist, "You don't know what fascism is if you think that. You don't know what freedom is, son." You can only imagine where it went from there and two of the protestors followed the older men and the last think I heard, shouted from halfway down the block, was, "Move to Canada *ssh*le!"
I love Chicago sometimes. It is such a study in contrasts. Great cultural resources and complete Midwestern impatience with bullpucky. It can be a beautiful and refined city and the back of the yards it was 100 years ago. Fascinating.
