In the hospital this weekend

This is not my idea of fun. I went to urgent care this morning because I have another cyst under my arm (like the one I had before that was mrsa). I had gone to my PCP on Thursday and she drained it and I thought all was well. It was a little bigger than a peanut when she lanced it. It didn't drain at all on Thursday or Friday, and it got bigger. Friday afternoon. I called the doc to find out what to do. The nurse basically said I hadn't been on the antibiotics long enough yet and to wait it out. When I woke up in the middle of the night, it was about the size of a ping-pong ball. By this morning, there were two distinct lumps. One about the size of a walnut and one a little smaller than a tennis ball across. Did I mention I didn't sleep from the pain? So this morning a friend went with me to urgent care. The doctor took one look at it and sent me to the ER. I was poked excessively- blood drawn, at least three doctors feeling it, an ultra sound (inconclusive) and then a CAT scan. After the ultra sound, the doctor told me there was no fluid, just hard tissue and air. Because of the air and lack of pus, he was worried it could be necrotizing fasciitis and said I needed IV antibiotics and I'd probably be here at least 48 hours. I thought they'd admit me anyway, but not for that long. So now I'm waiting. They won't even know for sure what it is until the blood cultures come back, which he said would probably be 48 hours. They've also not let me eat at all and it's 3:35. I've had a slim fast shake and a banana cookie today and that's it. I finally just sent my friend for food bc the nurses didn't seem concerned with getting the doctor's all clear. Of course, just now as I'm typing this someone brought me a tray of food. I sent it away. I'm thoroughly annoyed. First they don't tell me if I can eat, then they bring me a tray when I've said three times already that I was sending someone for food. Oh, and after the CAT scan, they didn't hook my IV back up for at least half an hour. Someone just forgot, and then they ignored my call the first time. If they do that with my next pain pill, there's gonna be trouble.

I definitely use my razors for too long. They're just so darn expensive. I've also wondered if its related to my running since my bra (I wear an underwire one and a sports bra) chafes on that side. I've been using friction block on it, but maybe it still hurts somehow. I also saw the infectious disease doctor today. She asked if anything had gone around school. There hasn't that I know of, but sometimes kids get stuff and their parents don't tell us. I'm scheduled for surgery at 7:30 in the morning. I have someone from school coming during the surgery to relay information to my family. Practically everyone I know works and I just couldn't ask someone to take a day off. I will let you know when I know more. I've gotta scrub the infected area tonight. I'm not looking forward to it!

Best of luck, Shy! Hope it turns out well and very soon. Also, getting answers to the questions you have. I am having sinus surgery on Thursday morning, my second nose surgery (inwardly, not cosmetic) in less than a year. Hope I can breathe properly again soon.

Sinus stuff stinks!  I have three flower pots in my room right now and my allergies are kicking in.  I'm thinking about sneaking a zyrtec, even though I know I'm not supposed to.  I feel my mental status declining!

Surgery went okay.  It was over pretty quickly.  I came out of anesthesia crying, asking for anyone and everyone I knew apparently.  I had a friend in the waiting room and I wanted her there immediately.  When the (cute but married) nurse told me she wasn't there yet, I started crying more and asked for my mommy.  Then I vaguely remember him asking me where I was from, and I told him then asked if him there was anyone in the hospital from there.  I wanted a familiar face, and I wanted it NOW, dangit!  After the anesthesia wore off and the crying stopped, they took me back to my room where my friend was.  During the surgery, they cut open and cleaned out the infected area.  It feels much better today, although there's still pain.  It's just a different kind.  The doctor said another 2-3 days in the hospital plus I may need help at home with packing the wound (they didn't close it).  My mom is hopefully coming on Thursday.  They still don't know the cause.

About halfway through all this, I did discover a positive.  First, my kids will miss me so much when I get back to school that hopefully they'll be good.  Second, I have Aflac.  I'm pretty sure I can get some money to help pay for whatever my insurance won't.  I have pretty good insurance, so I may end up just getting paid to be sick.  We'll see.

Funny recovery room story, tee-hee.  Too bad Mr. Cute Nurse is married.

Glad the surgery went well.  Hope it gives you some relief and all is back to normal soon - hugs from Nashville!

Glad to hear the surgery went well!  Hopefully you have a smooth recovery.  I am sure the kids (and other teachers, too) will definitely be missing you.

I am sure that nurse has heard some very crazy things!  And you never know, maybe he has friends....

The cultures are back. It is mrsa again like I expected. Now I'm waiting to find out what will kill it. The doctors think I should be able to go home tomorrow!  I also get to shower soon, so that's exciting!

oy vei..

Okay I am thinking about myrsa and although it is not that difficult to attract i am wondering if a stronger immune sytem could help.. so would you consider that?

My exH has that and he was in surgery twice already but he is 64 years old. Not comparing you two but I would think his immune system is weak so that is what I thought of first hand as he doesnt work with kids or anything where did he get myrsa. He also has lymes disease..

Can you find out how to boost your immunity. Right now not sure if it helps but I drink two ounces of apple cidar vinegar in water with cayenne pepper and it seems to be helping me. Now I have no idea what else except for Vit.D also.. but since you work with kids full of germs its tough.. Plus this is no one'es fault as this myrsa thing is becomingmore popular so forgive me but I am just thinking could it be an immunity thing?? What about seeing an immuniologist..(sp)

still pulling and praying for you shy and the healing group is sending you positive energy and healing as we speak..

dont forget about the old razors and throwing them out.

take care of yourself.. keep us updated..

I'm kind of wondering if my weight loss efforts are what triggered it. You can be a carrier and not know it. I've lost weight before, but never as quickly (and I didn't even lose it fast- 15 pounds in three months). There were a few weeks where I had several days in a row where my net calories after exercising were 900 or less. That's too low. I've always eaten enough, but I was exercising far more. I was getting chills and was tired all the time. Some people think it's okay to exercise off all your food, but that obviously isn't good for me! I just wonder if that lowered my immune response. I'm going to get some of the soap they had me use in the hospital. It's called hibiclens and says it can kill mrsa. It's expensive, but I don't care!
