How can people DO this??

Completely random, but I was just reading about the charges against Michael Vick (sorry, ESPN.com called :) ) for running an illegal dogfighting ring. It says the operation was "so grisly the losers either died in the pit or sometimes were electrocuted, drowned, hanged or shot." Who in their right mind (which he may or may not be) could intentionally kill innocent animals and/or watch them die?? This entire thing just boggles my mind...

>>Animal abuse for its own sake is a COMPLETELY different matter.

I agree. Animals feel better knowing they are being abused for a higher purpose.

Something like that happened here in MA, too, I think, not too long ago...a 20-something guy lit a cat on fire and tossed it into a building.

That's one thing that bothers me about people who abuse/kill infants.

If you were in the wild with a pack of hungry lions, they'd tear you limb from limb and have you for a meal.

Thank you, you said it far more eloquently and nicer than I would have. :) I have a feeling some people like to argue for the sake of arguing.

c2, you're not going to convince me to be a vegetarian and I just don't see things the same way, so we may as well agree to disagree.

>>Some people get angry that we kill animals for food.

Who is getting angry ? The OP was about a poster apparently disturbed by "...so grisly the losers either died in the pit or sometimes were electrocuted, drowned, hanged or shot."

All I did was pointed out that the same things happen to hundreds of thousands of every day - they are electrocuted ( first, if they are fortunate), then hanged and cut up. Or in the case of birds, are drowned or have their heads simply uncorked. People don't know about it because it happens behind closed doors far removed cities.. so what was the big deal.

A couple of posters immediately become defensive, attacking this and defending that , don't know why because I didn't attack anybody.

And the title of the thread was (is) "How can people DO this?".
Well people ARE doing this, whether or not you choose to be oblivious of it.

ITA. Having spent all my summers on a working farm, I know exactly what happens to live stock. And I still eat meat. Livestock from reputable farms and ranches are humanely euthnanized. As a personal opinion, chickens are dirty, stupid birds.
My best friend's aunt died from lukemia and her oncologist said the main reason was because her system was too weak from a combination of the chemo and being a vegetarian to recover.

Michael Vick thinks that like the rest of the Hollywood/famous athlete types that they are above the law and I think we just put him in jail. Or maybe in the ring with one of those wrestler types and see what happens. Plus, this hideous crime just keeps giving good dogs a bad rep.

Leukemia eventually kills. All the steak in the world would not have saved her.

Yes, but our point is that there's a difference between killing animals for food and killing them for sport. I have no problem with eating meat, and is there REALLY a "humane" way to kill?? The ends are the same, and no matter how you do it, someone's going to be upset (not necessarily you).
