How can people DO this??

Completely random, but I was just reading about the charges against Michael Vick (sorry, ESPN.com called :) ) for running an illegal dogfighting ring. It says the operation was "so grisly the losers either died in the pit or sometimes were electrocuted, drowned, hanged or shot." Who in their right mind (which he may or may not be) could intentionally kill innocent animals and/or watch them die?? This entire thing just boggles my mind...

>>c2, you're not going to convince me to be a vegetarian and I just don't see things the same way

I don't care what you eat. I judge people by their actions, not by what they say or how they appear to react to things.

Wonder who tipped off the thought police.

I really don't know all the specifics. Something about the vitamin D, iron deficieny and protein. Chemo often gives people anemia (did that to me). But the survival rate for lukemia is actually fairly good. She was a very healthy woman overall. But her specialist really pushed her to eat meat and she wouldn't.
I have plenty of vegetarian friends, even my BF herself for nine years, but she too had to eat meat again for health reasons.

I didn't think anything really bad was being said. More a debate, to my mind. Oh, well.

Uhh, it certainly wasn't me.

Anyway, this was definitely not the point of my post...it's a disgusting criminal act is all I was trying to say.

As for killing animals for food, this example came into my head about "humane" treatment and killing...I'm not a big fan of Whole Foods anyway because I think they're hypocritical on many counts, but two years ago they stopped selling lobster because they didn't think they were treated humanely. Um, you cook them by dropping them into a pot! How "humane" is that?? Plus they still have recipes for lobster on their website...so you can buy poorly treated lobsters elsewhere, just not at Whole Foods. ::eyeroll::

I, too, know people who have had to re-think vegetarianism because of its effects on their health. It's difficult to get that amount and kind of protein (and iron) without meat, largely since we're SUPPOSED to eat meat. I like tofu, but it's still not going to cut it in the end. Supplements are never as good for you as the real thing either.

My father has multiple myeloma, which is cancer of the white blood cells in the bone.

Depends on the kind of leukemia, how quickly it's diagnosed and treated, and the overall health/resilience of the patient.
