They are completely unrelated to each other.
First: I have this awful neck pain that has been there for over a week.

I know nothing about your neck pain.
But the undies....I see no reason why you can't returnt them. Most stores these days will take anything back. I actually returned an opened container of eyeshadow (didn't like it on) to Target and they took it back. Oh, and a hairdryer too. And you never even wore these, I say go for it.
The undies? Yeah, you can return them no problem if they still have tags on them. I had to return something just recently and there was no problem with it at all.
The neck pain - do you have any problems with turning your head from one side to another? Looking down or up?
Have you had any past injuries with your neck?
I ask becaue I get severe neck pain once in a while and the only contributor I have found so far has been my pillow. A lot of people, especially as we get older, will have more difficulties with our necks because our pillows don't provide us enough support or twist our necks into odd positions while we sleep.
So when I get those horrible neck issues, I know it's time to change my pillow. And since I've started buying those cervical support pillows the pain has stopped.
If you're taking an NSAID (like Advil is a good one) and using heat, that should clear it up once the muscle heals (if it's your pillow).
Additional: I just thought also, seeing as you've also just recently suffered a loss, that could contribute as well. Our bodies hold in tension and that could be contributing to it.
I'm starting to wonder if it is my pillow.
I had a memory foam pillow that actually caused more problems than what I started out with, but then I turned it around and put it backwards (so the bigger hump was under my neck and the smaller one was at my head) and the problems stopped.
But my BF hates the pillow I got him and he's tried it both ways. So some people don't find them comfortable at all. And that means I have *two* memory foam pillows I can use when I want to. :)
You may also try stretching the muscle out gently. Use the heat pad for about 20 minutes, then stretch your head to the left, like you're looking behind you as far as you can go, holding if with both hands, then to the right. That will stretch the sore muscle out a little.
It still takes about 10 days to completely heal but it does tend to help.
I get neck and upper back pain, too. It can be sinus-related, but it cam also be stress-related. It could be posture-related, too. I know I have bad "desk posture", so when my neck hurts, it's probably from the way I sit at the computer. I keep daydreaming about getting a massage to see if it helps, but I haven't done so yet.
As for the underwear, I'd say try - you never know.
Could the neck pain be tension? That happens to be the exact spot where I carry all of my tension. It's not a burning pain though, just tightness and if it's bad enough, it can sometimes progress into a migraine if I don't take something for it straight away.
Have you had a dermatologist check out that area? In some cases, cancer can cause a burning sensation. I don't mean to scare you but here's an excerpt I found: Burning pain. A tumor that presses on a nerve can cause a burning feeling. Sometimes radiation or surgery damages nerves and causes burning pain. Nerve pain is the second most common type of cancer pain. --You might want to have your back checked by a doctor and make sure that there isn't something going on.
Here's the link where I got the excerpt: http://health.yahoo.com/topic/cancer/living/article/healthwise/tv7314
I would take the underwear back ; )
1-you might want to go to the chiropractor, may be a pinched nerve or something. I know that when I've been working too much (I do massage) my right trap (upper shoulder area) starts to burn, that's when I know it's time for an adjustment or a massage.
2-if the tags are still on, you shouldn't have a problem!
My next question was if I go to someone, do I go the massage route or the chiropractor route first.
Personally, I would choose a massage over a chiropractor, just because as much as I love being adjusted, I love a massage more. Just make sure you find a therapist that can address your needs. Talk to a friend or family member that has gotten massages to see if they can recommend anyone, or if you decide to go the chiropractor route, check with your doctor (he/she may even know a massage therapist). My doctor is awesome about giving me referrals.
While massage can be very beneficial, if something is wrong, structurally speaking, it will only help so much.
Let me know what happens!
I SO want a massage now.
