My favorite is dancing, though of course that's not everybody's bag. You could spend a lot of money to learn, or you could find dancing events at clubs or the like where cover and a lesson is usually about $10. We girls have it a little easier in learning, because it's usually not to hard to find a guy willing to show you the moves. It's also a good way to meet circles of friends. People who salsa dance, or swing dance, or ballroom dance, etc. tend to move in the same circles and form groups.
I also joined a yoga studio, and though it's maybe on the more expensive end for a membership, I am really glad I did it. The lessons give me something to look forward to, and there are also familiar friendly faces there. It also makes me feel really good about my body, that I'm taking care of it and making it stronger, and it is really wonderful for learning relaxation and meditation.
Ultimately, I think it's worth it to spend some money to get plugged into a few things you really enjoy. Mine give me meaning beyond just my work and they add a little something special to most of my days. They also feel like kind of a safety net to me relationship-wise. Before I had my activities in my new city, I was completely attached to the bf I got pretty early on, and losing him felt like it would be devastating. Now I know I would be fine even if I were alone.
I know you walk on a regular basis. Have you thought about biking? You can get a pretty decent bike for under $100. There are all kinds of trails here if one looks for them, it's probably the same in your area. It's a great way to get in some exercise, and it's fun! I know there were some biking clubs in the downtown area, I never joined one but a friend of mine did, and loves it. Of course, that entails a little more money.
I know what you're going through, though. I am bored out of my wits today!!! I know if I tried, I could come up with something. Hmmm . . .
it depends and varies.. have you tried listing the fun things you'd like to do? Maybe try writting a journal. Journals practically FREE and a blank sheet of journal book at Barnes and Noble is around $5 and up. Catch the summer sun. Sun bathing is natural and FREE! Hanging out at your pals house, sing karoke, play casino or monopoly games is simulating. Going out in the nightlife is slightly inexpensive and dancing is a beneficial work out?! Going to a lounge or jazz club, enjoy performance of open mic night is probably only less than $10. Good luck in finding your new activity.
How about finding out if there's a 10K or half marathon you can walk sometime later this summer? I find training for something like that is a pretty good motivator to get out and walk. Many if not most races these days are open to walkers.
If I don't have someone to do things with then I do not go out. I found that the MeetIn.org group in Portland is a great way doing things and not knowing anyone. There may be a group in your area.
There are lots of different clubs that are activity based such as hiking, bicycling, etc. as well in our area. Plus there are community college/adult ed. non-credit courses which I've done as well such as swing dancing, historical walks in the city, kayaking, etc.
My friend started this "slow food" group where she has had people over her house to do pot lucks.
I've seen people post on Craigslist for activities as well.

I think my biggest issue is that I don't have anyone to do those things with.
Getting a bike is a goal of mine when I have a place with a garage or porch or somewhere to store it.
How about finding out if there's a 10K or half marathon you can walk sometime later this summer? I find training for something like that is a pretty good motivator to get out and walk. Many if not most races these days are open to walkers.

Let us know what you decide (if anything).
Good luck.
