I know exactly how you feel. It's no fun when we bust our humps & don't get a peep. But if we screw up.... oh WOW! Do we ever hear it from principals and such!
As long as YOU know you're a good teacher, and your students learn, then that's what matters.
I think there's far too little recognition for good work in general. I think it's great that your principal thought you should have won, though. That says something!
Do your students' parents ever say thank you to you? Do your kids give you little presents? Sometimes I think the best recognition is those small moments from the people you have touched directly. The industry awards (at least in my experience/field) tend to be popularity contests anyway, so I think the direct thank-yous are sweeter and more
You do NOT suck, Shy! I totally agree w/tallgirl on this one and she hit it right on the noggin. There really is far too little recognition for good work and a job well done. I mean, we don't expect our bosses or supervisors to praise us on a daily basis, that would get a little annoying after while. But getting a congrats or a job well done or good work makes a person feel good and gives them that motivation to continue to progress and do an even better job. I think you are an awesome teacher who has a tremendous amount of patience. You know deep down that you are a good teacher and so does your principal. That's all that matters :-)
~ Last year I received a kidney transplant from my older brother from another state. I'm glad and thankful the operation as a success. Just don't tell him that now i have 3!!!
Yep, ditto on that. I used to work for a company (I was salaried) where it didn't many how hard you worked or how many hours you put in, they didn't give a flying flip. I'd put in 60 some odd hours a week and work my tail off, but none of us got recognition for it. I mean, we didn't expect to get praise every single day, but a thank you would have been nice when we would have to stay after hours, to clean up someone else's work. Oh,...and if you made one itsy bitsy mistake, you better believe you had six different ppl breathing down your neck about it.
And they wonder why I left and why they had and still have a large turn over. Several other ppl that I used to work with and still talk to this day, wound up leaving as well because they just couldn't stand the working environment.
well i'm salary plus bonus if applicable. but something should be said on working with someone in they ways you know how they work. 50 hr weeks are not a big deal for me.

Before I even read your post, my first thought was "She so does NOT suck!".
I know it's disappointing not to win, but you have made so many positive contributions in your field.
Thanks, Mark.
You know what?
I do get what you're saying - it's nice to get acknowledgement of a job well done.
But the reality is, we are paid to do a job. It's not up to our employers to feed our self esteem.
